Love Songs — 2017

Marriage, Mormonism, Religion, Romance

Each year for our anniversary, I love selecting an “album” of songs that represent how I have grown and how Bryan and I have grown together. Each song’s lyrics express what’s in my heart and I hope it relays to my dear sweet husband, how much I care for you.

This year’s album begins with one of my top 10 songs of all time: “Under Pressure” by Queen and David Bowie. We both love these artists. They were brilliant and unique. The world is a duller place without Freddie and David. As brilliant as this song is, what is most beautiful is how it came about — it was written by just a few men and performed in one day. In just one day, a perfect song was created. Just like the day we met, a perfect partnership was created. We have had to work at our partnership, but it felt right on the first day — just like this song.

The next song is one you introduced to me: “Fragilidad” (“Fragile”) by Sting. The song’s lyrics focus on how fragile someone who has been under pressure can be. We have been through many crucibles and have been fragile from time to time.

Next is “Rise Up” by Andra Day performed by Esera Tuaolo, When I first heard this, it caught my attention because I desire to rise above where we are today and I know you do too. Together, we will rise to heights that are new.

The next song is “In the Shape of a Heart” by Jackson Browne. He is a brilliant songwriter and taught many we respect about the art of songwriting. Thank you for buying me a real ruby early in our marriage. It reminds me that my “price” (value) is far above rubies (Proverbs 31:10).

This song is “This Never Happened Before” by Paul McCartney. It’s a love song in which the writer/singer is surprised by love. I have loved before, but I’ve never loved someone in the way that I love you. Our love is the way love should be. I understand that now. Thank you for being yourself and letting me love you. I am a better woman for it.

This is another song you introduced me to, Sting’s “Si Estamos Juntos” (“We’ll Be Together”). We will be together — today and, I hope, always.

The last song is one a dear friend suggested, Ed Sheeran’s “Perfect.” You are perfect for me. You are not a perfect man, but I see potential in you. I want to be with you eternally and I know you feel the same way. Thank you for 11 years of loving me. You are a gift from our Heavenly Father. I am grateful you actively work with me to have a celestial marriage in our terrestrial world. Thank you. Eternity might be long enough to love you … might be.

I love you.
